Collection: Kikuchi Suketada

菊池祐忠 (Kikuchi Suketada) uses the tatara iron-making method to make tamahagane. That tamahagane is used for knife production. He hammers it repeatedly in a process called “orikaeshi tanren” to forge it like a Japanese sword. The knives have a soft cutting edge, are easy to sharpen, and have good edge retention.

武州祐忠 (Busyu Suketada) is a name of his knife brand.

About Suketada

Who is Suketada?

Mr. Suketada Kikuchi said, “I was an office worker. However, when I thought about my life before I turned 30, I had the feeling that this was not good enough. So I wanted to do a job that I could continue for the rest of my life. That’s why I chose the path of a craftsman.”

He learned the knife-making from his masterm Ueda Sukesada. Ueda said, “When you’re just starting out as a swordsmith, swords don’t sell. That’s why many swordsmiths go out of business. For modern people, knives are more familiar than swords. It’s important to continue working as a blacksmith even if you make kitchen knives.” Even if people are interested in Japanese swords, there are certainly few customers who actually buy them. Most people will be satisfied just looking at the swords displayed in museums.

Kikuchi-san aims to introduce many people to the charm of Japanese swords and to expose them to Japanese culture and history. "As a blacksmith, there is no greater happiness than providing you all with cutting tools that will help you lead a fruitful and rich life", he said.
